    • Experience the highest active volcano in Europe

If you want to experience Mount Etna – the highest active volcano in Europe – with an expert volcanological guide, this is the excursion for you.

The trek on the southern side of the volcano offers a complete experience, showcasing its contrasting landscapes and vibrant colors. This excursion combines the volcanic history and natural beauty of Etna’s southern slope. Starting from Nicolosi, known as the "gateway to Etna," the route ascends to the South Station at 1995 meters above sea level. Along the way, you’ll pass Monti Rossi, the eruptive fracture that caused the 1669 eruption reaching Catania. You'll also see the plateau where the 2001 lava flow stopped and navigate a series of switchbacks crossing the striking 1983 lava flow, offering breathtaking photo opportunities.

The tour begins at Rifugio Sapienza (1900 m), where you will take the cable car up to 2500 meters and then continue by 4x4 vehicles to 2850 meters. From here, the trekking journey to the summit craters starts.

You will walk along the edge of the central crater, admiring the two main vents, La Voragine and Bocca Nuova. The hike continues towards the South-East Crater, the site of most recent eruptions. After a break to enjoy the incredible panoramas and capture breathtaking photos, the descent begins.

You will then reach the northern base of the Barbagallo Craters and the stunning Valle del Bove, an ancient caldera formed about 9000 years ago from the collapse of Etna’s old eruptive centers. After a stop here, the trek continues towards a lateral crater from the 2001 eruption before descending back to the cable car, which will return you to the starting point.

    Duration: 9:00 AM – 2:00 PM
    Walking time: approximately 4 hours
